Tanmani Set: Traditional Puneri Tanmani Jewellery
A tanmani set is one of those pieces every Maharashtrian family recognises at first glance. Rows of small pearls, a flat pendant in the centre set with red and green stones, and a fit that sits just below the collarbone. At our store on Laxmi Road, it is the piece mothers ask for when a daughter wears her first nauvari saree. Here you will find our full range, from light two-row designs for Gudi Padwa to fuller pieces for the wedding day.
What Makes a Tanmani Necklace Different
The word tanmani really refers to the pendant. It is usually a flat, slightly curved piece with stones set in a gold-tone frame, and it hangs from several strands of small moti. A tanmani necklace is shorter than a ranihaar and longer than a choker, so it fills the space between the neck and the blouse line very neatly.
All our pieces are imitation jewellery with a gold-tone or antique finish. They are not real gold, and we say that to every customer who asks. What you get is the traditional look at a price that lets you actually wear it, instead of keeping it locked in a cupboard.
The Puneri Tanmani Look
A puneri tanmani is a little more refined than the heavier village styles. The pearls are strung close together, the pendant is smaller and neater, and the colours stay classic: ruby red, emerald green and white. It suits the Pune way of dressing for festivals, which is traditional but never overdone.
How to Choose the Right Tanmani Set
Most customers come in knowing they want one, but not sure which. These are the three things I always ask about.
Number of Strands
Two or three strands look light and work well for pooja days, office functions and small family events. Five strands and above give that full, bridal look. If you wear a lot of jewellery already, like a thushi and a long haar together, go lighter on the strands.
For a Short Neck or a High Blouse
Pick a shorter strand length and a smaller pendant. A big pendant on a high neckline pushes up and sits awkwardly. We can show you the difference in store in about two minutes.
Pendant and Stones
Red and green stones are the classic choice and go with almost every paithani. Plain pearl pendants look softer and suit pastel sarees. If your saree has a lot of zari, keep the pendant simple so the two do not fight for attention.
Tanmani Jewellery for Every Occasion
Tanmani jewellery comes out most during Gudi Padwa, Mangalagaur, Ganpati and the wedding season. For a haldi or a mehendi, a light two-strand piece is enough. For the wedding itself, brides usually pair it with a nath and matching earrings.
Some customers call it a tanmaniya set, and a few of our older customers in Chinchwad still say it that way. It is the same piece. A bride’s aunt came in last month asking for “the old tanmaniya, like my mother wore”, and she left with a three-strand design that looked almost exactly like her family photo.
If you like the pearl look but want something longer, have a look at our moti ranihaar collection too.
Caring for Your Tanmani
Imitation jewellery lasts well if you look after it. It will not stay bright forever if you spray perfume on it every morning, and I tell people that honestly.
Simple Care Tips
Keep it Dry
Put on perfume, hairspray and cream first, then wear the necklace. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after use, especially after a long, sweaty day at a function.
Store it Flat
Keep it in its box or a zip pouch, laid flat, so the strands do not tangle. Do not store it with other metal pieces rubbing against it.
